Pros

ABW is great! The benefits are great, a supportive team environment, and a healthy work-life balance. There’s genuine opportunity for growth depending on your position and department. Overall, it’s been a positive experience and a place where I feel valued and supported. I have not been here very long, but I can see why so many people have longevity in the business.

Cons

I have yet to deal with a con worth noting.

Pros

Working with kids is rewarding and there are some very nice folks working for the organization. There is some flexibility with scheduling.

Cons

It's impossible to meet productivity requirements. Clinicians are dropping like flies. Management prioritizes expensive downtown office buildings that clients find inaccessible rather than paying living wages. Management forces clinicians into the office at 9 am in the worst traffic time weekly for meetings that could easily be conducted online. The caseload requirement doesn't take into account how much driving we have to do between clients. There is zero empathy or advocating for us or for clients from supervisors. Supervisors gaslight clinicians and try to normalize being burnt out before even being licensed. The PTO and sick days are combined so it's really not as good as they make it seem. County documentation requirements are time consuming. Mileage reimbursement isn't anywhere equal to cost of gas and wear and tear on cars. Company encourages clinicians to perform "therapy" while driving and other unethical practices. Supervision itself is useless. There is no focus on process or further training that would benefit the client. Instead, were assigned busy work or the focus is on billing.

A Better Way Response

Thank you for acknowledging the rewarding aspects of working as a mental health clinician. It’s what keeps our staff coming back each day. A Better Way (ABW) makes a concerted effort to lay out staff productivity expectations, and to equip staff with tools and resources to meet them. We do our best to retain employees by providing a series of HR check-ins to make necessary accommodations and support career growth. Regarding your program’s weekly in-person staff meeting, we find this to be a completely reasonable request, and this requirement is clearly stated during the hiring process. ABW is a community-based and client-centered organization, figuratively and literally meeting clients where they are to provide mental health and other services. We understand there is sometimes a significant amount of driving involved, but this is the nature of the work, and we strive to be fully transparent regarding driving requirements. ABW pays competitive wages and exceeds the industry standard of PTO allocations, aiming to create as much work-life balance for our staff as possible. Our generous time-off policy includes 4 weeks of PTO (which increases to 5 weeks after 2 years of employment), 14 paid holidays (including 2 floating cultural holidays) and a fully paid year-end holiday break (that includes the already-paid holidays of Christmas and New Years).
