Pros

Being forced to navigate office politics or unreasonable demands from unreasonable MD.

Cons

Never knowing the boss’s mood creates a “walking on eggshells” culture. Constant criticism or harsh treatment can make employees doubt their abilities. People avoid speaking up, leading to silence rather than innovation.

Pros

Good business model much needed in Africa to support international businesses.

Cons

My time at ABC Expat was marked by an extremely toxic and hostile work environment, which was in stark contrast to the company’s public image as a champion of compliance and professional integrity. During my tenure, I witnessed a concerning pattern of employee mistreatment, lack of psychological safety, and blatant disregard for labor laws and ethical standards. Employees were frequently subjected to insults, public humiliation, and unsustainable pressure, often without regard for their mental health or well-being. The leadership style reflected a lack of emotional intelligence and cultural sensitivity. The environment became so unbearable that it led to the resignation of more than 10 country managers and over 20 employees within a short span — a glaring indicator of a systemic issue. Despite promoting itself as an expert in compliance and expatriate support, the internal culture failed to live up to even the most basic standards of professional conduct. I do not recommend working for or partnering with ABC Expat unless significant changes are made in leadership, internal culture, and governance. I share this review in the hope that it contributes to positive change and greater accountability.

Pros

Exposure to the operations of an expat service company. An opportunity to learn, if you're proactive and able to navigate a high-pressure, unsupportive environment.

Cons

Interns are often treated as lesser or disposable, which creates a toxic and demotivating environment. The leadership style, especially from the Managing Director, can be extremely intimidating — interactions often carry a tone of superiority, making it difficult to speak up or feel valued. There’s a noticeable lack of empathy and emotional intelligence in both HR and MD. Professionalism can sometimes take a backseat to personal bias and favoritism. Feedback, when given, can feel less constructive and more discouraging, leaving interns unsure of where they stand or how to improve. The environment often feels cold and unwelcoming, particularly for those who are just starting their careers.
