Pros

Good amount of vacation time and often let out early on holidays. Communication is mostly open by email and during meetings. Some of the supervisors and managers are top notch people. The Executive Director is one of the staff, as he was once a case manager. The location is good in Center City and is near Reading Terminal Market.

Cons

Social services pay scale is average for field, but still low in comparison with other work. Little room for advancement, especially if you don't have a Bachelor's or Master's degree. A person without a bachelor's or master's can never be promoted in the agency, no matter how long they've worked. The upper management is tenured for life, which means that their incompetence and lack of updated skills must be tolerated. Turnover is relatively high at the agency.

Pros

You are given a great deal of support here. You are encouraged to challenge yourself and support your clients. Some employees have been here over 20 years and its a proud distinction. There is a focus on self care that helps employees avoid burning out and supervision is consistently offered. It is a place that takes care of its clients and its staff. Work/Life Balance is required and you're sent home at the end of the day. One paid hour lunch each day.

Cons

Its difficult to find parking in some office. Some client situations are very difficult.

Pros

Very supportive environment, weekly supervision meetings, shortened work schedules in the summer, generous vacation days. This was the first job I had that insisted I leave on time each day to ensure a proper work-life balance. There were frequent trainings to ensure case managers felt comfortable and knowledgeable. Overall, for someone wanting to gain experience in case management and social work, this is a great place to start.

Cons

For this area, the pay is very low. Even for those with advanced degrees, there is little room to grow one's salary. There is an extremely high turnover rate, most likely due to the low salaries. This is a shame, because what clients need is stability with their case management. The work itself can be emotionally difficult.
