Pros

The students are nice and many of them are hardworking. The teachers by necessity must care deeply about teaching and want to work hard.

Cons

Most teachers will leave after 1 to 2 years for good reason. The administration puts on an initial friendly face. That quickly changes as it becomes more about making money for the school than about teaching children. Expect to spend more time on fundraising events than lesson plans or extracurricular activities (this goes for the students as well as the teachers). Teachers are actively encouraged by administration to shame students in front of their peers for not contributing to fundraising events. As a teacher, if you do not raise several hundred dollars in funds during your first few weeks in school for the Golf Outing, expect to be sat down by administration and asked to pay out of your own pocket. This goes for the Chocolate Drive as well. Read your contract and have it looked over before signing. There are many aspects of it that administration will try to use against you. The infrastructure of the school is painfully outdated. Do not expect to be able to make copies of worksheets or packets efficiently, print in color, or utilize technology in the classroom. It's worth googling the names of members of administration to see what they have been involved with in the past. You will not have enough time or energy to teach effectively at this school. It will be all about fundraising and playing catch up. You will not grow as an educator. The most heartbreaking thing is how the priorities of the administration and the overwhelming teacher turnover rate disrupts the education of the students.

Pros

There's always something exciting happening at Adelphi Academy! The students often spend more time inside the school than their own homes, so it is important to provide as many unique opportunities and activities for them as possible. From leadership retreats and field trips, to assemblies and spirit days, to daily instruction and extracurricular activities, the caring and interest shown by the teachers and administrators is evident. During my time at Adelphi, I was proud to be part of the planning team and enjoyed seeing the reactions of the students whenever a new event was introduced or held. It was an outstanding experience for adults and students alike.

Cons

The only con I can point to is the lack of interest among a very, very small number of educators who seemed to just go through the motions. This job requires original thought and interest, so these folks ended up not being a good long-term match.

Pros

Meeting great students and families

Cons

Long Working Hours: The expectation to work excessively long hours has become the norm. This often extends well beyond the standard 40-hour work week, with many employees, including myself, regularly putting in 50 to 70 hours per week. The work-life balance is severely impacted, leading to physical and mental exhaustion. No Overtime Compensation: Despite the long hours, there is no provision for overtime pay as they define your as an exempt employee. The additional hours are neither acknowledged nor compensated, which is demoralizing and unfair to employees who go above and beyond their regular duties. Constant Belittlement: The 'management' often engages in belittling behavior, making employees feel undervalued and disrespected. Constructive feedback is rare, and the focus tends to be on criticism rather than encouragement and support. Lack of Respect: There is a pervasive lack of respect for employees at all levels. This manifests in dismissive attitudes, disregard for employee opinions, and a general sense of apathy towards employee welfare. The absence of a dedicated Human Resources department exacerbates these issues. There is no formal channel for employees to voice their concerns or seek assistance with workplace problems. There is only the union that is the management and that is the beginning and end. This lack of support leaves employees feeling isolated and powerless to address the toxic work environment.
