Pros

Non-management employees in general show great professionalism and technical skill. You will inevitably develop professional and excellent technical skills, particularly when working in the laboratory

Cons

Extremely toxic work culture: you are expected to work long hours with very little pay. Mandatory weekend shifts were implemented without discussion to employees. Employees have consistently needed to stay in-office well beyond office hours. If employees put a hard deadline on leaving the office at the actual work hours, management bullies them and shames them for doing so and has 1:1 talks stating that they are not “working hard enough” or that they need to work harder. Previous employees have stated they began to exhibit early signs of depression. If by any chance you do not fit into the very specific work culture of the office, you are humiliated with comments such as “they think they are too good for everybody else”. The proof is in the pudding: employee turnover rate is high (many leave after less than 1 year) No concern or compassion for dedicated loyal employees: You are expected to be completely loyal and dedicate your entire life and wellbeing to the company. Anything short of this standard, you will be threatened to be fired. Multiple employees have sacrificed their entire wellbeing and life for the sake of the company, only to be shirked as “they are obligated to do so as employees”. No upward mobility, no concrete career development: Because of the toxic work culture and lack of acknowledgement to dedicated employees, promotions are near impossible to achieve. You will learn many techniques and management skills, but will never be rewarded for accomplishments. There is also no career development guidance and mentoring; you are expected to know protocols No work life balance: No sick days. If you are ill you are expected to take your own PTO. If you leave before the year end, you are expected to pay back this PTO. Lack of diversity and inclusion: Bullying in the workplace have caused others to drop out when they do not fit into the “culture”. Multiple inappropriate racial remarks and teasing from upper management have been implemented. Employees have told other interviewees inappropriate work comments. Management has also mentioned that they only want to hire one demographic Incompetent management and HR: Multiple employees have voiced concerns of toxic work conditions, only to be dismissed as “too sensitive” or “not having a grip on reality”. Complaints were filed and HR acknowledged that management needed to go through social sensitivity training. However, this has not been followed through, and the toxic work culture remains No separation of personal life with work life: This one is definitely the worst offender of the entire lot. They do not keep their toxic work culture within the confines of the office. Instead, they pressure you to download WeChat and message you outside of the office, disrespecting personal boundaries. I have also been a victim of defamation and toxic, hurtful rumors being spread via WeChat when I fell “below employee standards” Unprofessionalism and bad communication: Besides the aforementioned bullying, management exhibits terrible communication. There is a lot of setting unbelievably high standards, but no communication on how to improve. Management also does not believe in focusing on what employees are doing correctly, because they believe that encouraging and complimenting employees is counterproductive. Employees who make inevitable human error are shamed during company meetings held before office hours, in order to “maximize” on procedure time. Due to proprietary reasons, this is the tip of the iceberg in terms of errors and faults. This company has little to no concern for your wellbeing, your future, your life outside of work, your life in general. Proceed with caution.
