Pros

Getting to help LGBTQ youth is very rewarding. Watching the young people succeed is definitely a big pro if you care about the work. Also as an openly LGBTQ person, I rarely had to worry about discrimination from supervisors or coworkers. The pay is also pretty good compared to other orgs.

Cons

It’s not easy work. You deal with youth who are traumatized, face a lot of stigma, some who are addicted to various substances, and some who are in a mental health crisis. There are occasionally fights and destruction of property. If you aren’t in a good headspace to handle conflicts and emergencies, it won’t be a good fit. Also very little free time if you are promoted to any kind of supervisory position.
