Pros

Volunteers are very passionate. They make ACS look like what it really is on the inside.

Cons

Most of the money is used on salaries and everything else and not the actual cause. I felt horrible collecting money from volunteers who believe in ACS's cause. All the money is spent on advertising and information that people can easily look up for themselves. They are stingy spending money on cancer patients and volunteer appreciation, but, are wasteful when it comes to ordering food for meetings or other in-house events. I never witnessed so many managers abusing their cards on buying lunches whenever meeting with other managers. Not even in for-profit companies. They would smile in front of vounteer's faces, but, talk about them as soon as they turned their backs. They try to promote health, nutrition, and cancer awareness among the employees, but, have obese managers with bad attitudes, asking you to order them lunch all the time and you have to take your own vehicle. Management comes down hard on the office employees and are quick to point fingers and place blame whenever they make mistakes. I really feel the volunteers are the hardest workers and they do everything for free, while actual ACS employees and management's pockets are full and they get to enjoy very good benefits that most honest businesses can't provide. Event managers complained about petty things during every weekly meeting and it was always about money. So sickening. Never talked about cancer patients or anything of that nature -- it was all about MONEY, MONEY, MONEY. Just working there, I seen what a scam it is. It's all smoke and mirrors. They use cancer patients as their way to lure those in who have lost loved ones or who are battling with cancer themselves, as a way to generate money to fill their pockets. Sure, they teamed up with Kaiser. It makes everything look legit, right? Well, Kaiser, just like the big Pharmaceutical companies aren't interested in keeping you healthy - it doesn't generate money.

Pros

the work is meaningful. a lot of great local partnerships to maintain, very public health focused work when i first got hired 5 years ago. the team is great and work life balance is amazing! can learn a lot about partnership strategy and management.

Cons

after 2-3 reorganizations, our work has become more just dissemination of information and programs we offer rather than focusing on public health consultation which is disappointing. the pay is okay depending on where your geography is. the worst is the growth opportunity. there is NO opportunity for a career pathing here at acs. applied as an internal candidate to 4 roles and havent received an offer due to internal political dynamics. its not a great way to retain employees for the long term if employees are expected to just stay in their one role without support to grow employees to stay within the organization in different roles.
