Pros
Relaxed atmosphere, free sodas / snacks, casual dress, supposedly "work from home" allowed, freedom to innovate / bring new ideas, on-the-job learning
Cons
You will start at close to minimum wage regardless of your position or it's skill set. After 90 days, it will not go up much more. The yearly raises are also laughable.
The owner will literally say "Drink the Kool-Aid, if you're here for the money, you're here for the wrong reasons. We're a family." Then buy a truck. Then blame the inability to pay more on the employees not producing enough income.
The communication between the executive team and everyone else is slim to nil. They will decide on new products and services to offer without consulting the people who will have boots on the ground.
When the owner acquired a new building this past year, all employees were required to work over the weekend and we put in LOTS of overtime to wire the new building and get things ready plus the actual move, the executive team got checks for their overtime pay while the rest of us got comp time at a 1:1 rate.
The owner literally said to the IT department "I can replace you with Outsourced IT as needed and just go back to being a software company only."
The owner holds super important information about clients and their services, or has forgotten it since it happened 10 years ago and no one made any documentation about it. Clients still contact him directly for help instead of the appropriate department or medium. The owner does not support his employees when his clients are abusive and rude.
The owner regularly mentions his porn browsing, making everyone uncomfortable.
They regularly bill clients for unnecessary services and equipment either to make a profit or due to negligence to do due diligence in determining the client's needs.
Most of the developers are young men close to just out of college age, most all with roommates or other people to help mitigate cost of living expenses due to the low pay rates.
If you like being tasked with work that you don't have the resources or information to complete, this is the place for you.
