Pros
Artefact has a good reputation in Seattle. A good place to start a design career and build a portfolio. You will get recruited by big companies like Amazon and Facebook or can go to other design firms easily after working here. Many talented designers- many with years of experience. If you get a chance to work together and actually collaborate you'll learn a lot. If one of the senior designers or owners decides you are talented, perks and opportunities to work on good projects will follow. For the average person, you'll do the same projects that any design firm does. Attractive building and good vacation policy (4 weeks).
Cons
Artefact talks about its great culture **a lot** and most of it is talk. Senior designers do everything on projects that involve clients, presentations, and vision. They leave the real design (= long nights) to the rest of the team. This can happen for years. Unless you are a lead, you won't do anything else. Artefact talks about a flat culture, but it's not the case on projects. Want to get better at presentations? You won't get the chance. Want to work with other disciplines? Most projects don't have the budget. And yet, working with other disciplines is something that Artefact is proud of. Recently an employee made an overtly racist remark in front of the entire company and the owners didn't say anything. It's not surprising- one of the management team dressed up as a race (that was not her own) on halloween. A few strong cliques dominate. If you aren't ''in' you'll be passed up for promotions, good work, opportunities, and be unfairly criticized- sometimes publically. It can feel like high school. Not sure this qualifies as 'best place to work' - one of the three supposed values of the company.
