Pros

Great opportunity to expand your skills and knowledge. With two processing plants, two open pit and one underground mine; this is a very large site with varied equipment and needs. The management team is capable of good decisions, is supportive of maintenance and engineering efforts.

Cons

The gold industry is struggling through a tough downturn in prices. Barrick is saddled with a large debt from over spending during the last high gold prices. This has put many projects out for several years and limits the future of mine operations. The corporate management has been replaced with individuals primarily from the financial field. This is a good thing for the company from a financial aspect; but the vision for the future of mining has been removed, I am not sure how this will impact the company in 5 years.

Pros

-people are supportive and caring -good safety culture -Elko is a cool town

Cons

-hired without any details (my own fault for not being skeptical enough) -bus ride -lack of communication regarding interns Interns were hired with seemingly no communication between HR, actual supervisors, and training staff. I've heard of interns not knowing who their direct report was two weeks into the actual internship, and some supervisors didn't even know they were getting an intern or didn't plan work for their interns. I would strongly discourage anyone from accepting an internship offer from Barrick without an interview with employees in your field of study. There are plenty of other mines to intern at where, most importantly, you will know what you are getting into, get travel assistance and better pay, and have a much shorter commute time. It simply doesn't make sense to do it unless you already live or go to school nearby.
