Pros

I worked at Belk in the Women's Department and later the China/Bridal Department. Eventually I moved over to the cosmetics area and stayed there for the remainder of my time with the company. I will say that Belk generally pays well as far as the pay rate of the area in which they operate. They work with school schedules and I've even seen them allow for longer lunches to those who have responsibilities outside of work that they need to attend to (A woman I worked with used to have two-hour lunches in order to cross town to pick up her young children from school and make them lunch.) I loved working in the cosmetics area at Belk. The cosmetics employee's get more respect than other employee's. Good if you work in cosmetics, bad otherwise. I worked on both sides and can see why. Cosmetics employees have more personal interest in their products and sales, but they also get commission.

Cons

The throng of managers one has to deal with. You've got the store manager, your department manager, and then whoever is manager-on-duty each day to deal with...and then there are visual managers and security managers, all of which perform manager-on-duty responsibilities at times...so it is difficult dealing with so many, often conflicting, voices.

Pros

I loved my job. I’m met so many wonderful people. And the associates couldn’t have been better.

Cons

I hurt myself and had to have surgery, and I was on Worker’s Comp. with limited availability. Because hours were short in operations, they made up this crazy position and wanted me to be ”lead” of the markdown team. I knew that meant for the most part to do go backs. I told them I wasn’t allowed to be on my feet that long and so she said they couldn’t accommodate me and I had to leave. And then the manager had the nerve to call their workers comp and told them I wasn’t coming into work. The management at that time was horrible. But there was a time when I first started working there that to store manager, and the assistant manager were wonderful. We were all so sad they left, but it didn’t take this new manager that I was talking about any time at all to lose almost the entire store associates.
