Pros
Great faculty coworkers! The facilities have improved over the years, many are quite modern. The benefits are good, medical is reasonable, matching 403b retirement is good (there are no pensions).
Cons
Workload gets worse every year. Administration expects more and more of faculty between un-ending paperwork, student advising(Helping them register for classes every quarter), red tape formal processes, committees, departmental budgeting/monitoring, night time marketing at high school events etc there isn't enough time left to teach, prep for classes and grade. Teaching has become an after thought for the position. There are no department chairs to handle the paperwork. It all gets pushed on program faculty and the Dean's are all to overworked to help much with paperwork. Deans burn out often and you might find you have a new boss every year or two. The college is supposedly working toward more "shared governance" but what that means is more committees that are just there for show. In reality the VPI or President can/do override the recommendations of committees. So, they do what they want any how under the guise of shared governance. The committees are a waste of time, but you are required to be on a certain amount of committees. Advising students what classes to sign up for each quarter can be a huge amount of work depending on your program. In some programs the students all kind of take the same classes so it isn't too hard to direct them all. Other programs you could be responsible for advising up to 60 students each quarter as to which classes to take and they all have different schedules and plans. The full time college 'Advisors' only advise for the first quarter then it is the faculties responsibility to advise them for the rest of their 2 year stay.
