Pros

Good long term contracts with high resilience to market conditions. Bexar maintains a balanced budget which equates to very slow development but high retention rate during downturns.

Cons

County leadership uses Mercer data to develop pay scales. Pay will never be higher than median for the geographic region. Budget shortfalls due to slower-than-anticipated property tax income will result in fewer initiatives being awarded to departments and slow program development, which will affect individual career development, projects, and training opportunities in turn.

Pros

Good experience with county budgeting, high-level fiscal work, and public-sector operations. The role itself offers meaningful responsibility and exposure to major budget processes.

Cons

In my experience, the work environment was deeply unhealthy. I experienced inappropriate and sexualized comments from leadership, excessive workload, poor boundaries, favoritism, and a culture where raising concerns did not feel safe. Professional lines were often blurred in ways that made the workplace confusing, stressful, and at times humiliating. Concerns that should have been treated seriously instead felt minimized, redirected, or made riskier to raise. The overall message was that some people were protected, some people were favored, and others were expected to absorb unreasonable pressure without complaint. This did not feel like an isolated problem or a one-time misunderstanding. From what I saw and later learned, the office and executive leadership have also been tied to multiple discrimination and retaliation complaints and publicly reported settlements. People considering this job deserve to know that context before walking in, because the day-to-day experience may be very different from how the position looks on paper.
