Not worth it - Sales Associate Big 5 Sporting Goods Employee Review

Pros

Flexible hours, easy job, employee discount, get to learn about different hobbies.

Cons

Nearly everything else. Part-time employees have erratic hours anywhere from 8 to 40 hours a week, so don't count on this job if you have bills to pay. The dress code is strict and forces you to wear dress clothes and dress shoes while you lift heavy equipment and stand on your feet all day. Women are allowed to wear anything they want but men are forced to wear dress clothing. There is very little mentally stimulating or interesting about this job and many employees feel unappreciated and undervalued. Training is inadequate and you will have to fend for yourself. Many policies are not explained, even basic ones such as the return policy. There is little incentive to be a high performer and slacking off is common. The store itself is claustrophobic and outdated, with little changed over the past decades. The warehouse is filled with garbage and rotting food, and there are boxes of random merchandise scattered everywhere. This is the "bargain bin" of sporting goods stores and it attracts trashy and classless customers who will get rude and snappy. There are no benefits whatsoever for part timers.
