Pros
Decent pay, great coworkers, great regulars
Cons
This has been the worst coffee job I’ve ever worked. I have been in the industry for over 8 years (specifically specialty coffee) because it’s my passion and I have a genuine love for coffee culture. Coffee culture goes beyond just making a great cup of coffee, it’s how you speak and treat others. Blank Street has no regard for those who have any experience in the field and rather have young people who have never even worked in hospitality be the face of their stores. The management sucks! They make you feel bad for real life situations that are out of your control and will actively work against you. I was hired to be a shift lead with Blank Street (due to my years of experience I’ve been a shift lead at a couple specialty coffee companies in NYC at higher faster paced shops with more attention to detail than Blank Street), yet after a month they decided to tell me they’re going to keep me as a barista for now to “develop” me into the role…. How are you developing someone who already eat sleeps and breathes coffee culture with hospitality and high standards? And check this, the reason why is because my fiance got really sick and ended up on life support and I had to be the sole caretaker for my household. They cut my house from full time to part time and refused to give me the promotion (fully knowing what was happening in my life mind you). They then decided to promote a couple other baristas to shift lead who have never even worked in specialty coffee, Starbucks doesn’t count. If they want to model themselves after Starbucks they need to make that known to people who are joining the team. They suck the love for coffee out of people and it becomes just another stressful job. They will lie to you about a promotion, constantly saying they’re moving you up and then a week or so later they say they don’t need you. It’s so backwards that they’d rather have kids who know nothing about hospitality yet alone coffee and expect each shop to be run like the top coffee shop in NYC. It’s deluded. They treat people like crap and will gaslight you into thinking it’s your fault. They literally tell you they don’t care much about customer satisfaction as long as they’re making their money…
