Pros

Great people and great product. Cool office.

Cons

Compensation has consistently lagged behind the level of talent and performance within the organization. Many of the people I have worked with at BOA are among the most capable and intelligent professionals I have encountered, yet compensation and merit increases do not appear to reflect either individual contributions or the company's strong financial performance. It can be discouraging to hear about record sales growth while annual raises remain in the 0–2% range. Career development opportunities for engineers are also limited. The organization primarily offers progression through Senior Engineer, Lead Engineer, and Manager roles, but with very few positions available at the higher levels and low turnover, advancement opportunities are scarce. As a result, many engineers may find themselves with limited paths for long-term growth. In addition, project expectations have become increasingly aggressive. Product Development teams are consistently being asked to deliver more, faster, and with fewer resources. While efficiency is important, the pace and expectations are often not matched with the tools, staffing, or support necessary to execute successfully. BOA offers a positive culture and is an enjoyable place to work with many talented colleagues. However, for individuals whose priorities include career advancement, increased responsibility, and competitive compensation, opportunities may be limited. Looking back, I believe my professional growth and earning potential would have progressed more rapidly elsewhere.

Pros

Working at BOA provides a genuine sense of connection and community with people who are passionate about making the best products possible for use in the great outdoors. You can always find someone to join in any endeavor, whether mountaineering, throwing pottery, or volunteering to build and deliver bicycles for children. I am always impressed by the exploits, and hearts, of coworkers. BOA is a business founded on solving problems, and as such is teeming with critical thinkers and problem solvers. Individuals are constantly striving to design, engineer, and test the best solutions to improve performance. My favorite thing about working for BOA is that this is not reserved solely for BOA applications in footwear. Folks are happy to lend a hand, an ear, a shoulder, or other knowledge if it means solving a problem or addressing an issue inside or outside of work. The talent and compassion inside these walls is profound.

Cons

Sure, BOA has its challenges. Leadership strives to improve the lives of the employees, and there is a pretty great "total compensation" package that includes salary, healthcare, bonuses, stock options, health and wellness gifts, and other benefits. The salary no longer feels competitive, but is likely lacking industry-wide. Overall, the balance seems to swing in favor of Director-level and above, which can be frustrating. Still, it is a great place to work, and I challenge you to find a better group of people.
