Pros

Pay tends to be above the median for the most part. I can't speak to the higher ed-specific side of the business, but for everything else, oh yeah, the pay is quite competitive. Lots of free food. So many of my coworkers are super smart, hardworking, and give their all every day. A diverse workforce and different cultures are celebrated, which is appreciated. I have more to say about this in the cons section as well. Excellent HSA program. Free Headspace subscription as a part of the benefits package. See the W/L balance section of the cons...you'll need those breathing exercises.

Cons

Work/life balance: Generally speaking, it's pretty intense. The company has ambitious growth goals, so others, as well as I, regularly put in long hours. No one will explicitly say out loud, "Work evenings or on the weekends", but the workload and expectations in place say it all. Over time, the intensity of this environment takes a significant toll. Maybe that's why we got free Headspace this year. Since I've been here, the types of crises that some coworkers have experienced have left a lasting emotional impact on the teams they leave behind. That said, I feel that much more for the folks in higher ed... they run an even tighter ship with all the time-tracking and micromanaging! Career opportunities: Almost every all-hands, it seems like folks are begging to upskill into new roles, especially with AI and automation reshaping the job landscape. It's tough to watch qualified internal candidates get passed over for promotions for external candidates. Also, if your job function isn't mission-critical, it's discouraging to work hard and continuously express a desire to expand skillset, and feel like it's in vain. On the one hand, everyone is being asked to maintain our existing customers, onboard new customers, and somehow optimize, cut costs (even more than last year), and just generally do more with less. On the other hand, that leaves little time, energy, and resources left to go towards professional development. Access to LinkedIn Learning does not an employee professional development program make. Business outlook: It's frustrating, discouraging, and jading to see that leadership messaging around financial performance and cost management has become increasingly predictable over my time here, especially given how tirelessly everyone works. It reads more as a scripted warning than an encouraging call-to-action, and I can feel the employee confidence gradually being eroded here on the ground level, especially as workload intensity only increases. Diversity: Yes, the company is quite diverse in its workforce in terms of race and gender...however, this diversity is not evenly reflected across all functions and levels. Customer phone support, skilled labor that requires OSHA training and a safety vest, administrative support, and marketing roles? Yes, diverse. Leadership and business strategy roles? Not so much. I'm not knocking the symbolic gestures that Boldyn makes during heritage months to have a tasty cultural meal or say Happy International Women's Day. That's fine. But it would be more meaningful to invest in its diverse workforce through intentional development pathways. Apparel: I think it's absolutely bonkers to offer quarter-zips, vests, and button-downs with the company's logo for employees to buy at a $140-$165 price point.
