Pros
The experienced gained has been invaluable and you are connecting with other people in the industry. I do editing and proofreading and it is very satisfying to collaborate with the author.
Cons
Unless you hit the jackpot with the next Harry Potter, there is no way you can live off of what you make. You are paid a percentage of royalties and most pay periods (I would say every three months?) I will see around seven dollars. But again, great resume builder for credibility when looking for work that does pay.
