Pros

Good pay compared to nearby jobs. Free chicken for lunch 2 times a week. Good benefits.

Cons

The variability of start and end times, largely dependent on the line's operational status, creates a unique challenge in their work environment. For instance, a second shift starting at 1 PM may conclude at 7 PM or as late as 11 PM. The unpredictability encourages some operators and leaders to expedite their tasks, sometimes compromising on procedures, with the aim of finishing their shift at a more predictable hour. In these instances, stopping the line for a necessary fix can imply extended work hours into the evening. During the training phase you may be exposed to machinery noise that interferes with the audibility of instructions. This can be a source of frustration and the learning outcome may vary based on the trainer. Often, the emphasis is placed on minimizing downtime and maintaining efficiency, leading to instances where certain procedures, like ensuring the thermometer is inserted into the chicken center, may be bypassed if they yield undesired readings. Occasionally, I've observed foreign materials like boards and plastic in the chicken hoppers, presumably fallen from pallets. The sight of pallets and vats, going from the floor to being suspended over the hoppers, raises concerns regarding the adherence to sanitary procedures. Similarly, the sanitarians using the same forklifts used by operators handling raw chicken appears counterintuitive to their cleanliness standards. Cold conditions in the working areas often cause discomfort to workers, leading to frequent nose wiping. Unfortunately, I've noticed instances where glove replacement doesn't follow this act, raising health and safety concerns. Certain tasks, such as dispensing spicy breading, may have uncomfortable side effects like eye and nose irritation due to airborne particulates. Additionally, temperature variations across the plant can cause discomfort as employees move from cold to hot sections, dressed in insulating clothing. At times, I've experienced instances of miscommunication regarding shift start times. This occasional inconsistency tends to reflect poorly on the individual despite being an administrative oversight. Employees' personal protective gear includes a freezer coat, a smock, glove liners with rubber gloves, safety glasses, earplugs, beard/hairnet, and a bump cap. Given the size of the plant, forgetting any of these items could result in a time-consuming retrieval trip. The factory has certain areas where the working conditions are not ideal. For instance, a particular line's fryer constantly emits an uncomfortable smoky haze causing eye irritation and an unpleasant smell. Despite complaints, the solution so far has been the provision of protective goggles. The factory's extensive layout can be confusing for newcomers due to the lack of available maps. And, understandably, the uncertainty surrounding the shift's end time can lead to persistent queries from employees, which can become somewhat distracting over time. Addressing any of these concerns will most likely not change anything as they have been this way for a long time.
