Pros

Lower level people beneath management are fun to work with. Some flexibility that comes with a startup.

Cons

I'm glad to see someone else posted about their experience at BuiltWorlds. You can take a quick scroll down LinkedIn to see the dozens and dozens of people who have come and gone, often with really short tenures. The revolving door nature of BuiltWorlds talent is unlike any company I've ever seen or worked at. Hostile work environment with an unsustainable business model. Organizational structure changes at a whim and your job is always in peril. Nobody in management seems to know what they're doing and most clients seem unsatisfied. But because the industry is so tiny, BuiltWorlds is one of the only outlets they can get press or attend events with. That also means you'll always work with the same companies and people. No room for professional growth. Respect for those in the office - especially women at times - is alarmingly low.

BuiltWorlds Response

Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback. Also, thank you for your comment expressing your view that employees at BuiltWorlds are fun to work with. We could not agree more! We have a fantastic team, and we are immensely proud of their success. Thank you also for noting that we have trusted new employees with the flexibility to try new things. Recently, we have sought to find a new model for informing and connecting our community. Some of those things, particularly in the area of media, unfortunately didn’t work out. There was definitely some difficult shuffling as we worked to focus on the things that are working. Our membership and research-fueled conferences are among those things, and we are excited to continue to build on those strengths in the coming years. Regarding the concern you raised about professional growth, at BuiltWorlds’ current size, professional growth opportunities come from working with the team to help figure out how to achieve business objectives. People who do that well generally find reward. That said, we recognize that management support has been thin, and we have been working to address that. Although we are a small organization, diversity and respect for diversity are paramount concerns for us. While we have had high turnover, particularly as we have refocused the business, we have worked hard to provide equal opportunities and professional respect toward all genders, faiths, sexual orientations, and races. We are proud that BuiltWorlds has been, by far, one of the most diverse organizations in the industry. We pledge to continue to strive to ensure it remains that. Your comments are particularly timely because even as you posted your comments, BuiltWorlds was extremely pleased and excited to welcome, not one, but two veteran female business leaders to our top management team. There is certainly more we can do on this front, but we deeply hope that you will take this as a significant sign of our deep and honest commitment to equal opportunities for all at BuiltWorlds.
