Pros

CDM Smith is employee-owned, which results in an employee-focused culture. It's a huge difference if you have ever worked for a company acquired by private equity and seen how bad things can become. I have good faith in CDM Smith's leadership to make practical decisions that prioritize things such as ethics and quality over profit.

Cons

Being a large company, it suffers from some people trying to game their way up the ladder by playing into office politics rather than producing quality work. So many good employees at CDM Smith do not do this, but I was surprised by a few things I had never experienced when I worked for a smaller company. Some processes feel bureaucratic, but the tradeoff is working for a smaller company that has no process in place. No system is perfect, and CDM Smith is a great workplace overall.

Pros

Flexible hybrid schedule is very nice and starting salary is high for early career engineers.

Cons

The main people running the company are not engineers and you can tell. They are all focused on utilization with rates often set at 97% or higher. This had led to my supervisor asking/telling me to not charge company required trainings. As an early engineer it really feels like they don't want to invest in me and only care about their bottom line. If you are an early career structural engineer you will also not get any meaningful work until you've been with the company for at least 5 years. The senior engineers do not trust you and will only give you grunt work.
