Pros

Culture/Management: Since the company is small, you really get to know your coworkers. The management want you to succeed and do their best to help you learn and grow. As someone who didn’t have a ton of regulatory background, I can easily say I learned a lot in the short amount of time I was there. Learning the work: You can expect the first 1-3 months to be training. A lot of the training are videos that senior project managers recorded while training other employees in the past and then you shadow the senior project managers while they give a training, or visit a client. Eventually they let you lead the meetings until you are confident to be on your own. The training never really stops, since there are so many topics in compliance. This is because each client is unique and have unique requirements to their business. There are standard templates available to help complete the projects, but it needs to be backed up with some regulatory knowledge, otherwise there will be issues with the reports. By the third month, the management will assess if you are ready to be on your own (there is no formal process). They mostly see if you are able to use resources already available (training videos), and complete the tasks using these videos. The senior project managers answer any clarification questions, or help you look into the regulations if necessary. They are very approachable, and take time to help you. Clients: You are assigned clients throughout the Bay Area. A lot of the clients I met with were pleasant to work with. They do seek your advice and expertise on compliance related topics, so it’s important to build that foundation (unfortunately, 3 months of training will never prepare you for some of the questions the clients have. BUT! They are understanding that you sometimes can’t answer right away and need to do research to get back to them). Flexibility: I was able to work hybrid. Around 3-4 days a week, you’d be visiting clients (usually 1-2 hr appointments). There is a lot of flexibility given to you to design your schedule as best fits for you and your clients. I also really enjoyed not having to worry about work during the weekends. There were very few occasions where I worked Fr 30min-3hrs, but this was because I chose to do that, not because the management required it. Benefits- CDMS offers medical benefits (there is a small amount you have to pay monthly). 401K is also offered (I believe there is a match for up to 4%) It is important to note that CDMS is a small company. Though it can’t match benefits larger companies offer, for it to offer these benefits, is significant in showing they care for you as an employee.

Cons

Entry level- CDMS is some where I can recommend to students who are willing to work full-time or those who are coming out of college, needing to build experience. The pay is minimum wage for salary (CA law- salary has to be 2 times the hourly minimum wage). This isn’t something that a person with a family or bills, living in the Bay Area can afford, but a great place to start/ intro to regulatory compliance. Pay- There is bonus, which depends on how many projects you complete. Bonus is calculated on a monthly basis. There is a base you have to hit (essentially your monthly pay), before you can start earning any bonus. Since the senior management helps you in the projects, they also get a cut which makes the minimum base (your salary) harder to reach. Overtime the cut is lessened as you take more ownership of the projects, and thus increases your bonus potential. The bonus also varies depending on the type of projects assigned. Certain projects are worth more, which by default sets you up to reach the base faster than smaller projects. When you are new, as I was, I was assigned a lot of small (valued less) projects which didn’t amount to a lot. This was especially demotivating for me. However, l know there were other senior employees who made a decent amount on bonuses. If you are willing to put in the time, you will see bonuses naturally come in over time.

Pros

I worked at CDMS for 4.5 years with no EHS background and it was the best place to start out my career. They trained me to be an expert extremely quickly. It is overwhelming at first but the results came in time and it was worth it. Compared to people who work for companies with an internal EHS team, my knowledge and ability is likely comparable to people with 20 years of experience due to seeing so many projects as a consultant. Pay goes up dramatically once fully trained and exceeds industry standards. In my time at CDMS, I got to see a huge variety of projects, got to see how a lot of different industries operate and met many fantastic people. Once trained, the job is extremely flexible.

Cons

Since pay is based on productivity once a project manager is fully trained, hustle culture is prevalent. This means, that for project managers, the job is best for people with certain personality profiles. Mainly, people who are relatively outgoing to deal with clients, hard working to keep up with productivity, and independent since each project manager is fully in charge of their own projects. If a new project manager has a hard time learning a lot of information or is generally slow, it can be discouraging. Typically the first 3-6 months, me and most other project managers I saw join didn't know if they would be able to learn everything they needed to learn and do everything they needed to do.

We're delighted to hear about your journey from starting without an EHS background to becoming an expert in the field. Your story is a reflection of our commitment to career development for CDMS team members. We're continually improving our onboarding and training processes to ensure that new team members are not only well-prepared for their responsibilities but also receive ongoing support throughout their careers at CDMS. Automating job operations to streamline processes and reduce manual workload is a priority for us. In addition to working on improving our systems, we are also hiring team members to assist the EHS Project Managers with a lot of the routine work. Thank you for sharing your feedback about your experience at CDMS. We really appreciate your input and we are grateful to have you as a member of our team. We are glad to see your comments on the flexibility we provide with schedule management and work-from-home options, as well as your appreciation for our office facility and the learning opportunities available at CDMS. We appreciate your feedback about employee training and continue to enhance our onboarding and training processes to better prepare our team members for the diverse range of projects we handle. One of our core values is not just to do a task but also reflect on how we could do it better next time and implement that improvement. We understand that the nature of EHS consulting means there will always be new topics and projects to tackle - even experienced professionals regularly encounter unfamiliar areas, and developing the ability to adapt and learn is a core skill in this field. Our senior EHS team members provide guidance and support to ensure successful project execution across all the work we take on. We also continue to strengthen coordination between our sales and operations teams to ensure optimal alignment on project scope and team readiness. Regarding benefits, we are always evaluating our offerings to provide the most competitive package possible for our team members. Currently, CDMS provides Medical & Dental insurance, paid time off (PTO), and a 401(k) plan with both Roth and Non-Roth options, alongside our competitive compensation structure with regular performance and pay reviews. We value your input and are committed to making CDMS an exceptional place to work.
