Pros

Exposure to the Arts. Career focused on culture and the community. Great team of staff to work with. Interesting projects to work on. The directors I worked with were excellent mentors and leaders.

Cons

Below average salaries (even for non-profits). Very long working hours. No investment in professional development (below a directors role). Very high turnover. Health benefits are co-pay. No other additional benefits are offered to staff (*aside from tickets to attend concerts which is a nice perk).

Pros

Since the lockout in 2004, it's been relatively stable. Musicians foster a generally supportive, positive environment. Over recent seasons, many younger musicians have joined with beneficial effect on artistic level and general attitude.

Cons

Lower paying than peer orchestras in Vancouver, Edmonton. Some musicians complain of too many Pops-type concerts. Workload can be quite heavy for certain sections.
