Pros

Cambia offered a competitive benefits package, including 401(k) matching, health insurance, and a monthly transportation stipend. Their telecommuting policy was also fairly flexible, and over my three years an increasing number of people took advantage of the ability to work at their own pace, at the expense of the office's community. Pay was a bit low compared to industry standards, but it was acceptable (although advancement opportunities were limited).

Cons

There are two different kinds of people who will find success at Cambia Health Solutions: 1) The rules-oriented mild-mannered type that strives to avoid conflict, even if this leads to a loss of individuality or respect. 2) The bloviating middle manager, intent upon micromanagement, business buzzwords, and valuing appearances over ability. This is not a company that will work with you to reach your goals. Sadly, it is one of those "saying less is more" companies, where even anonymously sharing your critical insights or your feedback about managers will lead you down the (albeit slow, thanks to bureaucracy) path of termination. The upper ranks are comprised of traditionalists, who will cast disparaging remarks towards analysts with longer beards or messy cubicles, even if the person in question does not have a client-facing role. Whether this is by deception or design, raises and career advancement occur at a snail's pace, giving the false impression of hope and forcing the individual to wait quarters to years. And don't let anybody fool you about their message. The common refrain is that people want to "make a difference" and "be a catalyst to transform healthcare". This company is not innovating in the manner that they claim to be. They are further contributing to the mess that is our healthcare system by keeping incompetent brown-nosing micromanagers in their ranks. And when I say micromanagers, I mean the kind that spend 30 minutes of 1:1 time explaining to a lifelong computer user that they have to "click the save icon otherwise the document won't save". Want another example? How about the kind that spends an hour during a formal review of a multi-million dollar hospital model arguing about which shades of colors to use in the reporting deliverable instead of the integrity of the analysis? Change is slow because companies like Cambia Health Solutions hire the loudest individuals over the most competent.

Pros

Some of the smartest bright-minded people in IT work there, or used to. Decent pay and benefits.

Cons

The company appears to be in a constant state of reorganization, creating ongoing uncertainty about job security and contributing to low employee morale. This lack of stability has led to confusion, shifting priorities, and an overall lack of focus, which is reflected in the high turnover currently seen within the IT organization. This is especially disappointing because the company was once known for attracting and retaining IT professionals who built long, successful careers there. Leadership appears to lack a clear, unified vision, and that disconnect starts at the highest levels of the organization. Compared with the previous CEO, who despite his shortcomings was widely respected and viewed as an approachable leader, the current leadership feels much more removed from employees. There was once a stronger sense that executives understood and were connected to the day-to-day experiences of the workforce. Today, that connection feels significantly diminished, leaving many employees with the impression of a growing divide between the C-suite and the people doing the work. Honestly, it's quite sad what has happened to Cambia.
