Pros

Free snacks and sometimes beer for after-work parties, to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Tuition assistance is offered if you need it. The office environment is pretty casual, typical of a tech startup - office dog, t-shirts and jeans, couches.

Cons

The failure to respect women in the company is blatant, but management won't acknowledge the issue. There's also a serious lack of diversity. All of management is white men, and they make decisions in the stereotypical way that you hope doesn't exist anymore. The wage gap between men and women is disappointing, and wages across the board are below market rate. The focus of the company is getting work done fast to make a quick buck, instead of building out a great, quality product. Interns are used for free/cheap immediate labor, instead of being trained properly to be better full time employees in the future. Basically every task is get it done now, fast, and shove it out the door before it breaks. The lack of maturity on the part of some key players in management is disappointing and unprofessional. Decisions should be made for the good of the company, not based on your feelings. Basically every bad thing about tech startups that you hear about, is here.

Hi there – I’m sorry you had a poor experience with us. I appreciate your feedback as we’re always looking for ways to improve. Just wanted to take a moment and make sure I’m addressing your concerns. First, in terms of diversity, there is a HUGE problem in our industry with disproportionate workforces in terms of gender. I am hyper aware of this problem as I believe that a diversity of perspectives is critical for success. A recent report puts the average percentage of women working at tech companies like Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft and Twitter at just 29.1%. At Canvs, women make up 34.6% of our workforce as of this past month. We also have two high powered female executives currently serving on our board. And while we’re proud that we are exceeding the status quo, we can always be getting better. You mentioned a failure to respect women, which, if true, is inexcusable. We’ve recently added new language in our employee welcome letter and handbook to reiterate our zero tolerance policy about discrimination. I’ve also recently run a feedback session with our female employees to understand any concerns directly, and we’ve brought on a HR consultant to re-introduce company-wide training for workplace behavior. From a wage standpoint, we’re proud to provide equal opportunity employment and compensation for our team. We hire the best talent available, and compensate them well, with salary re-evaluations every 6 months. There is absolutely no wage gap between men and women at Canvs. Thanks again for the feedback and best of luck!
