Pros

Friendly and collaborative work environment. If you end up with a good manager, you might have an enjoyable career here.

Cons

Raises are not aligned with inflation. Only one opportunity to get a raise a year. Challenging to move up in the non-profit for entry-level employees as they avoid giving promotions unless it "aligns with the mission". They have a policy that you have to work there for a year before any promotions, but will make exceptions if your manager likes you enough. Salary is still not livable as many jobs require a car so you can't rely solely on public transportation. Lots of employee turnover. So far, over 30 people have been fired this year which doesn't include people leaving by choice. Senior management is out of touch with their employees.

Pros

I have been very impressed with the CEO and her visionary leadership. The organization is well resourced and is doing great work in the community. The volume of meals being distributed into the community speaks for itself. The compensation is slightly above average for the industry and the benefits are the best I have ever had working for a nonprofit. The organization is data focused and acts more like a consulting firm than other human service organizations that I have worked for. I have been impressed with the advocacy work of the organization and their commitment to organizational values. Overall, I feel valued and fulfilled in my work at CAFB, it is one of the best organizations I have worked for.

Cons

The current climate in DC makes all humanitarian and human services work difficult with increasing constrained resources that result in a lot of extra stress for staff. It is a particularly hard for mission centered work.

Pros

Work wasn't physically or mentally challenging and staff can enjoy work from home options as the supervisors don't enforce HR policies they didn't agree with - just a "don't make me look bad" kind of attitude. Hardly required full time hours.

Cons

Highly segmented, little collaboration between teams regarding problem solving. "not my job" kind of attitude. Rotating door of staff coming and going.
