Pros

Executive team is strong and transparent. Culture is inclusive. Well-intentioned leadership contending with a difficult environment.

Cons

Product investment and innovation has dropped in recent years and quality is falling behind the competition, particularly McGraw-Hill. Far too much turnover and frequent cost cutting reorgs, making it difficult to see results of strategy over the long term. This results in a lack of continuity for the customer and their relationship to Cengage. Not a stable environment.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I appreciate the remarks about our transparent inclusive culture, as I believe that is what differentiates Cengage Group. Candor around changes happening in the organization are priorities for myself and the entire leadership team. Our primary objective in implementing recent changes to our business is to enhance efficiency and streamline our processes, ultimately improving our ability to serve our customers effectively and increase profitability. We’ve focused on identifying opportunities to bring similar work together to drive simplification, consistency, and efficiency. While we serve diverse markets, how we make, deliver, and support products is remarkably similar. Integrating teams doing similar work has been a key component of our operating model reset and driver of simplification. One example, relating to a point you mention, is our revamped approach product technology. Historically, when these teams were embedded in the businesses, they leveraged a variety of resourcing models. By bringing all product technology teams into Product Technology & Innovation under our new CDO, teams will leverage common tools and resources, giving us consistency in our approach, strengthening relationships with vendors and enabling us to focus our Cengage Group resources on driving innovation, while also delivering significant cost savings to the business. On a final note, I disagree with the notion that we have “given up” on our strategy; our industry is one of constant change and it is critical that we do not become complacent. I recognize these changes can often be unsettling, and we do not make these decisions lightly. Rather, we must keep a pulse on the needs of the unique education markets we serve and adapt our business processes to meet that need while continuing to deliver on our revenue and profitability goals. Best, Michael Hansen, CEO

Pros

Company has some interesting approaches to the market and in the past they seemed value employees. There are some good employees there and there was, in the past, visionary leadership, but the people with the vision and leadership skills left the company a few years ago.

Cons

The company actively de-values employees. They had a project they called "Project Horizon" where they told all employees they needed to cut costs, so the company was going to have multiple layoffs over 3-5 years - but nobody was allowed to know when, where, or why - - just one day large swaths of people would be gone. That hung over everyone's heads - for years, and is indicative of how Cengage values employees - it doesn't. Everything is about trying to secure new funding and prepare for an IPO, so they stopped investing significantly in the products about 3 years ago and that's about when they stopped acting like they cared about employee wellness as well.
