Pros

Working on the research team was amazing. My colleagues and I consistently planned and executed long-term projects mainly due to our excellent communication. My manager was truly one of the best in the business, and I always felt like I knew where I stood with her and the team. In addition, the company has lots of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) which host a ton of panels, discussions, and guest speakers. For transparency, I was an active member and leader of the Pride ERG and the Green ERG.

Cons

It often felt like the people at the highest levels of the company were out of touch with what was happening on the "ground," so to speak. They often missed the forest for the trees, or made embarrassing blunders at all-company meetings. In addition, the lowest-level employees at the company are paid far below what they deserve, and the turnover for those roles is very high.

Thank you for leaving a review about your experience working here. It’s great to hear that you enjoyed your team, manager and work as part of our research team. I want to extend a sincere thank you for dedicating time outside of your traditional responsibilities to help lead our employee resource groups, they are a crucial part of our culture which help drive connection and camaraderie. I am sorry to hear that you feel as though our leadership team is ‘out of touch’. Creating opportunities for candid conversations is a top priority for me and the entire executive team. We look to do this through our First Fridays and departmental town halls. Our employees underpin our success, I always welcome feedback on how we can help answer questions or clarify direction in these forums. I wish you the best in your next endeavors. Best, Michael Hansen, CEO

Pros

Company has some interesting approaches to the market and in the past they seemed value employees. There are some good employees there and there was, in the past, visionary leadership, but the people with the vision and leadership skills left the company a few years ago.

Cons

The company actively de-values employees. They had a project they called "Project Horizon" where they told all employees they needed to cut costs, so the company was going to have multiple layoffs over 3-5 years - but nobody was allowed to know when, where, or why - - just one day large swaths of people would be gone. That hung over everyone's heads - for years, and is indicative of how Cengage values employees - it doesn't. Everything is about trying to secure new funding and prepare for an IPO, so they stopped investing significantly in the products about 3 years ago and that's about when they stopped acting like they cared about employee wellness as well.
