Pros

Made decent commission as I exceeded goal every year I was here.

Cons

I give this company two stars because I do think it very much depends on what region you are in and who your direct supervisor is. You can also make decent money with the commission you earn, but the big payout is only once a year. The base pay is very low and there have either been no raises or very low raises every year I was here. Unfortunately, the region I was in had horrible leadership and someone in a leadership position would constantly yell and verbally abuse team members. This had been reported to higher ups and on written surveys but nothing was ever done about it. It’s also a big red flag when leadership has nothing positive to say about everyone who left before you. You’re telling me all of those people you hired sucked at their job, or is it a reflection on your management capabilities? My direct Manager rarely ever worked campus with me and I don't remember them ever doing a live sales presentation while I was employed here. They seemed to offload everything to another on the leadership team. Manager also expected detailed reports of what you did every day of the week so they can micromanage from their house. You can exceed your goal every single year you are here and still be put on a PIP and get let go due to “activity”. While I worked here, several people left and I believe only one was voluntarily because of retirement.

Cengage Response

Thank you for leaving a review about your experience. I am sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with your experience with Cengage Group and that you felt underappreciated in your role. As an organization we work hard to ensure our employees feel supported by management, that total rewards are competitive with the market and that staff are fairly compensated for the work they are responsible for. We take bullying/verbal abuse claims seriously, and if you should want to discuss this further you should feel free to reach out to Jeri Herman, Chief People Officer. Regarding promotions and career advancement, this is an area that we have invested in significantly over the past several years to ensure there is clarity on the opportunities available and the skills needed for individuals to advance. We are always working to evolve these efforts to make sure we are enabling people leaders to have these conversations with their teams, and providing individuals with the resources they need to grow in their career. I appreciate the feedback as we continue to improve. Best, Edwin Robles, SVP and GM of US Higher Ed & Canada

Pros

Company has some interesting approaches to the market and in the past they seemed value employees. There are some good employees there and there was, in the past, visionary leadership, but the people with the vision and leadership skills left the company a few years ago.

Cons

The company actively de-values employees. They had a project they called "Project Horizon" where they told all employees they needed to cut costs, so the company was going to have multiple layoffs over 3-5 years - but nobody was allowed to know when, where, or why - - just one day large swaths of people would be gone. That hung over everyone's heads - for years, and is indicative of how Cengage values employees - it doesn't. Everything is about trying to secure new funding and prepare for an IPO, so they stopped investing significantly in the products about 3 years ago and that's about when they stopped acting like they cared about employee wellness as well.
