Pros

My co-workers are truly dedicated, ambitious, thoughtful, smart, creative people. I feel lucky to work with them. I truly believe that the company is customer focused and dedicated to student engagement. I’ve been with the company for many years and this is the first time that I have felt motivated in my daily work by a clear, consistent vision and mission. Work/life balance is also very good, and there is a lot of understanding if you run into personal issues that require time off (as long as you get your work done).

Cons

Quality content development often seems to be an afterthought in the race to come out with new technology. The pressure is real, as the decline in print sales is significant, and student engagement is critical in overcoming the reluctance to embrace digital. However, the structure of teams (product, technology, and content development as separate groups) enables them to work in silos, which causes serious miscommunication and disconnect when they should be actively collaborating to create quality products. The atmosphere can be highly political as well for this reason, and so there is reluctance to listen when issues are brought up that might affect the customer, for fear of going against “strategy.” If the customer is truly first, management should listen when serious problems are raised that would impact the customer experience, regardless of the person/group who is raising the issue. My hope is that eventually people will put the politics aside and really work together toward the vision and mission set forth by the company.

Thanks for your post. I’m pleased with our progress, but there is always more to do. I recently had a conversation about the very issue you mention – some continuing silos - with one of our senior Human Resources Business Partners. To me, it’s a two-part fix: We can revise organizational structures to limit this tendency. But that alone is insufficient. The second part is harder. We need to collectively and individually overcome human nature and the typical desire to stick with your team. If you, or any of your co-workers, see an opportunity to make a positive student-focused change mid-stream, please point it out to your manager and/or a partner on another team. Practically speaking, we will always need to focus investments and can’t do everything all of the time. However, supporting your recommendations with a solid set of data or other facts gives you a great shot at improving or even completely changing an existing plan. I can assure you that we are working on breaking this down at every level of the organization.

Pros

Company has some interesting approaches to the market and in the past they seemed value employees. There are some good employees there and there was, in the past, visionary leadership, but the people with the vision and leadership skills left the company a few years ago.

Cons

The company actively de-values employees. They had a project they called "Project Horizon" where they told all employees they needed to cut costs, so the company was going to have multiple layoffs over 3-5 years - but nobody was allowed to know when, where, or why - - just one day large swaths of people would be gone. That hung over everyone's heads - for years, and is indicative of how Cengage values employees - it doesn't. Everything is about trying to secure new funding and prepare for an IPO, so they stopped investing significantly in the products about 3 years ago and that's about when they stopped acting like they cared about employee wellness as well.
