Pros
The people in research groups are excellent. At every level, you will find technical experts who are excited to share their knowledge and help each other succeed. Interesting and exciting projects to work on (when they aren't being killed by the business groups). Great place to start a career. Good salary, 9/80s, benefits.
Cons
No interest or incentives for upper business management to develop and support a long term vision/plan. They occupy positions for a year or two at most and take their promotions and leave. Not compatible with new product development. Largely flat organization with career opportunities for chemical engineers only. Everyone else has limited/no career development or progression opportunities.
