Pros

Many of the peers with whom you share this miserable experience are smart, capable people.

Cons

The Founder's "brilliant" business idea for Chore is to push people to the brink, while providing no business innovation whatsoever. Chore tells people to work for 5 companies simultaneously, and tells *them* to figure out how to manage the work load and communications, all while keeping each client "delighted" (be prepared to get SICK of this word). The contractual SLAs put the employee at odds with the client "delight" requirement. Hook them all up via 24/7 IM such that no client need be reminded that they're interacting with a fractional employee. All the while tell the employees you'd like them to manage 8 or more companies at once. The Bonus Plan is a deliberately convoluted lie. But look forward to always learning about the new, convoluted bonus plan, often introduced just in time undermine your accomplishment of the previous bonus requirements. Furthermore, every employee benefit or perk that the company agrees to pay for is a company that the Founder is personally invested in, and he’s merely funneling Chore funds back to his investment companies. If you would like any kind of legitimate WFH stipend or professional development of your choosing, you will be unequivocally denied. Time off is nearly impossible. Management won't help, telling the employee to find their own coverage from their peers, who are themselves drowning in work. His first operations company was built with 100% automation as its goal. It failed. Yet, with the promise of AI, the Founder continues to dream publicly of the moment when technology will liberate him from employing a team of humans. Humans are really just “in the way” — as he never seems to internalize the fact that he’s built a services company, not a SaaS company. (Hint: your employees would be happy to do more work in less time with AI wherever possible.) Chore is a culture of gaslighting and hype-cycles. It's enough to destroy the professional self-esteem of even the best employees. Most employees leave Chore before finding a follow-on job. As bad as it is, it's much worse for the many off-shore contractors working for Chore, at an even lower pay rate, with no benefits and where the treatment is borderline abusive.

Pros

I’ve been at Chore for about a year and a half, and it’s honestly been one of the most empowering experiences of my career. There’s a ton of autonomy and trust and you’re given real responsibility from day one and expected to figure things out, move fast, and make things better. It’s the kind of place where you get to own projects, not just execute someone else’s ideas. The leadership team, including the CEO, is incredibly accessible and open. It’s normal here to have regular one-on-ones, monthly performance reviews, and even hop on the CEO’s calendar if you have an idea or feedback. I’ve never once felt that giving feedback was risky — it’s genuinely encouraged and acted on. The pace is fast (it’s a startup, after all), but it’s a healthy kind of fast where you’re challenged, supported, and always learning. I’ve grown so much in my ability to handle ambiguity, prioritize, and get things done quickly. The people here are genuinely kind and supportive. It’s a culture where everyone wants each other to succeed and teammates go out of their way to help, share knowledge, and look out for one another. You always feel like you’re part of a group that’s working toward something meaningful together. Work-life balance is solid, too. You control your hours, your rhythm, and how you get your work done. The flexibility is real, not just a buzzword.

Cons

Chore is a fully remote company, which is amazing for flexibility, but it also means you’ll often collaborate across time zones. For overseas teammates, working U.S. hours (or partial U.S. overlap) can take some adjustment. It’s not for everyone, so it’s worth thinking about whether that setup works for you before joining.

Pros

The core concept, fractional ops for startups, has merit. Some clients are great, and a few teammates genuinely care. That’s where the good news ends.

Cons

Execution is erratic and ego driven. The CEO idolizes Elon Musk and tries to emulate that culture, prioritizing chaos, control, and male dominated decision making. Women in leadership roles are routinely sidelined, second guessed, or ignored entirely. The business model changes frequently with no warning or rationale. Sensitive client data is shared with underpaid overseas contractors without proper security protocols. Raises and bonuses are promised but often withheld. Contractors have been fired under shocking circumstances, including during personal tragedies. The company rebranded not out of strategy but necessity, after being sued for trademark infringement. The name changed, but the dysfunction remained. Client relationships are frequently strained, and when they choose to leave, the CEO has sent aggressive legal threats, further eroding trust in the brand.

We at Chore appreciate the author’s kind words about our mission, our clients, and our team. We are also aware that this author is a disgruntled former employee, who has resorted to half-truths and outright falsehoods in an effort to smear her former employer. Yes, we do work hard at Chore, viewing ourselves as a client-first organization that prioritizes the needs of our many happy clients. At the same time, we could not do the great work that we do without a terrific team of happy, committed, engaged employees and contractors. We pay them competitively based on their geographic location, and we are proud to be a global company making a difference in communities of all sizes around the US and the world. We would never let someone gone under shocking circumstances or personal tragedies. We view our team as a family and strive to treat everyone with the respect each individual deserves irrespective of their background, experience, location, etc. This belief - that everyone is equal and deserves the best - runs throughout how we treat our team to our mission and why we exist as a business. We are always transparent - from the first interview onwards - about compensation of all types, how, when and why it's paid. We take seriously clients’ data privacy and zealously protect sensitive information — any allegation to the contrary is false and defamatory. We are diverse in our employees and in our leadership, including women in key leadership roles along with persons of color and those from many ethnicities around the globe.
