Pros

They give you a block of business. Life/Wealth products are good although the fees on investments are extremely high

Cons

The training and support is sub par specifically when compared to other Life Insurance companies. There is limited to no support from management. There is a lot of talk about all the training during recruitment but it is extremely limited. The compensation favours selling the co-operators products even though they allow access to some better products available through other companies including RBC, Blue Cross, Great West life and Canada protection plan. Unfortunately, sales made with these companies pay smaller commission rates and do not qualify for bonus’ or recognition for the company’s clubs and trips. It seems like the intent is too incent the advisor to sell the companies proprietary products regardless of the clients needs which I assume will change with all the new regulations in the industry specific to putting the clients interest above your own. If you are new to the Life Insurance business I would recommend you stay away from the co-operators. If you have had success in the industry and have been trained elsewhere this could be a good fit. They do offer good products, there just isn't the proper amount of mentorship or leadership.

Co-operators Response

At The Co-operators we are open to receiving feedback as we realize there is always room for improvement. It is unfortunate that you feel that the organization is not meeting your expectations but we have many very successful Agency operations as we do offer a very good value proposition. We are a career shop and our focus is to manufacture and sell our own products and for those products that we choose not to manufacture we open the door to our advisor so they can put fences around the client. We continue to improve our approach to supporting new Advisors within The Co-operators and agree the best way to do that is through coaching and mentorship. We recently moved to a learning model that includes specialized coaching to enable our Advisors to successfully run client centric Agency office. The Co-operators vision is to provide Financial Security to Canadians and their communities. This means being in both the P&C business and the Financial Services business. The value to our clients is they can have all their insurance and financial service needs met at a leading Canadian co-operative organization. Please reach out to Fabiola_tonizzo@cooperators.ca to discuss the specifics appropriately.
