Pros
-You can get a chance to work on several things in different areas: GIS, plants, wetlands, turtles, fish, bugs. -Pay is pretty good, with regular yearly raises anywhere from 2-5%. -Time over 8 hours accrues as comp time (not overtime). -Room to advance to project management. -You get to work outside regularly. -Casual work environment, which can be pretty friendly.
Cons
-The work-life balance is not great. Working only 8 hours a day is essentially frowned upon, so be prepared for pressure to put in 50 hour weeks (on the low end). Don't expect to leave early the next day if you put in 12 hours the day before. -Management takes on too much work for the size of the company, see point above. -The benefits are just ok. Medical coverage is pretty mediocre, although the yearly deductible is paid for you into an HSA. 401k match and profit share are average. -The work culture seems to reinforce some bad habits, most of which involve a never ending work creep. People come in earlier and work later, stop taking lunch breaks, always expected to take calls and answer emails out of work hours. You'll notice it's only people who have worked there a long time/entire career or new and entry level, not many mid-level or upper level who have come from elsewhere. -The casual work environment can get unprofessional on occasion.
