Pros

1. Mission and vision driven 2. Diversity is practice and not lip service 3. Competitive salary/benefits package 4. Opportunities for continual professional development and growth 5. Company supports professional development and provides tailored learning opportunities 6. Uses technology well to incorporate those employees off site to the main office 7. Opportunity to learn from great thought leaders/company's senior management has open door policy and employees are often encouraged to voice views and ideas 8. Project management approach that sets the company apart and allows the small company to successfully compete against larger organizations 9. Expertise is valued, innovative thinking is encouraged, and provide great client relations and support 10. Billable hours system allows company to remain efficient/company is always looking for growth opportunities and employees are involved in the process

Cons

1. Company is small which is a bonus, however, this may pose capacity challenges at times 2. Billable hours system allows the company to remain efficient, yet this system may not fit all work personalities - be sure to do your homework to see if this style of management is best 3. There may be times where communications between employees and senior management may not be the most efficient, however, because of the open door policy with senior management, these issues can be troubleshooted quite easily

Thank you for taking time to provide such a systematic review. I wouldn't disagree with your assessment, both pros and cons. A small company like ours can have capacity challenges. We are in the process of putting into place a more effective method for anticipating labor needs that should help a lot. Most important, we are trying hard to hire the best staff to help us to have healthy growth. As you pointed out, there are many bonuses to a small company among them being able to really get to know and appreciate the people you work with. As an employer, I can really learn about what inspires the people I work with and how to help them learn and grow. I am happy to know that you find senior management accessible. We try.

Thank you for your feedback and support of our work. We are only as good as the people who we work with, our community. I feel very lucky that I can work with you and your colleagues. Needless to say it's been a crazy year, but we have been successful together and am looking forward to the great things we can accomplish in 2021. As I've written before, the professional services industry may not be for everyone, but you if you want to be helping to transform government, foundations, and nonprofit organizations cross country-this is a great spot to be in. So many exciting things going on. More advice and great ideas are so appreciated. Thank you again.

Pros

Community Science is a unique company that combines a social mission and ethics with impressive private sector efficiency. For Managing Associates there are ample opportunities to develop new and diverse skills; practice and hone research, facilitation and analytic skills; and receive top-quality mentorship and coaching from experienced senior staff. The leadership team cares about theory as well as practice, and upholds models of evidence-based practice and organizational learning throughout the company’s work. Community Science leaders also value high quality of research, client relationships and deliverables in implementing projects. Staff members – from leadership to associates – are dedicated, hard-working, and extremely intelligent, as well as current and future thought leaders and overall inspiring people. Community Science also offers competitive salaries and generous fringe benefits. Also, management at Community Science works with staff to provide support and accommodations for addressing personal and family issues and is flexible about working from home as long as deliverables are on time and of high quality. The company cares about employees and does its best to apply its values to the operation of company as well as the work it does.

Cons

The personalized management style combined with the 90% billable hours goal for Managing Associates (which has the advantage of increasing efficiency of the company) style leads to a strained and hierarchical culture. The level of collaboration within and across teams, as well as day-to-day communications among staff could be improved.

Thanks for the positive review even after you have moved on to hopefully better opportunities. We are trying to do our best to be great in every way and still keep our focus on social justice and strong communities. When you are so passionate about what we do. As you know, we are working to be better and to continue our healthy growth. Part of that healthy growth is to reduce the workload stress. That has been a top priority for the rest of this year for our management team along with improved interaction among our fantastic staff as well as greater engagement in company direction and transparency.
