Pros

The projects I worked on were interesting.

Cons

In a company this size there should be clearer communication and better organization. Although I got hired to work on a multi year project, I was usually given information about the project area the morning of field work. I regularly reported equip my malfunctions that were subsequently ignored or blamed on user error. One of these pieces of equipment was the truck I used in remote field sites that would periodically refuse to start. For the last months of my employment at Cypress, I was sent into remote work environments alone every day with no reliable way to contact emergency responders. Furthermore, for parts of my work, I was repeatedly instructed to record stream profile data in areas that were obviously dominated by sheet flow, rather than fluvial processes. Adding insult to injury, I was “let go” with no notice, even though I had never been reprimanded for poor performance, arrived at the office before my supervisors every day, and worked well over the 40 hours per week stipulated on my contract.

Cypress Environment & Infrastructure Response

Thank you for your feedback, we appreciate your continued interest in Cypress and willingness to share your experience. We’ve discussed your specific critiques and are pleased to report that since your departure at the beginning of 2016 we’ve improved on communication, organization, field equipment, safety program and processes. Your termination was for violating the Federal regulations for performing wetland determinations. Willful, gross failures in work quality are grounds for immediate dismissal. This was not your only documented reprimand.

Pros

Cypress Environmental is a great place to work. Professional growth and development are high priorities for all employees. Company culture is very collaborative, supportive, fun, and dedicated to producing high quality work. Management is extremely experienced, intelligent, communicative, and friendly. Since I started 7 months ago, I’ve worked on an array of projects including but not limited to: land management planning, estuarine marsh monitoring, topographic analysis, threatened and endangered species surveys, wetland delineation, bathymetric surveys, and pine savanna restoration. This diversity of projects enables me to constantly learn and tackle new challenges. I am always given the tools, guidance, and support I need. Honestly, Cypress is the most rewarding and enjoyable place I have ever worked.

Cons

Some people may not enjoy working for a small business, but I find it enables employees to work on a large array of projects

Pros

Cypress is a small firm, allowing me to work on a variety of projects which is not something that happens at larger firms. Due to the size of the company, I interact with the CEO often for work assignments, advice, guidance, etc. Cypress also allows me autonomy in my projects. I am given a clear understanding of each project's goals, deliverables, budget, and timeline and am able to work independently within the parameters given, which is something I enjoy (but others may not). Cypress is willing to let me pursue projects and partnerships with other companies for future work, if I am interested. This is something unique to a company this size and a positive to working here. Cypress has competitive salaries and benefits which is a huge plus. The CEO is clear when giving instructions and easy to work with.

Cons

The management structure at Cypress is relatively flat due to the size of the company. This means you can either view the company to have no potential to move up or you can view the company to have endless possibilities to move up. If you view it the second way - like I do - you have to be willing to put in the work to help create the structure enabling you to move up. While I don't see this as a negative, some might.
