Pros

Access to industry expertise and writing under the title of the biggest publishing house in Scotland opens doors for you. I had a lot of freedom to write between teams and adapt my style for various publications. The impressive office buildings are great workplaces and well-kept.

Cons

Mandatory press trips are to be taken out of your holiday allowance. Pay is very low and I was on less than a male counterpart who had far less experience than myself, yet the same job title. I was hired in at a measly £18,000 p/a for a full-time position. After two years, I remained only on £20,000 p/a. They encourage you to take more responsibility, which is exciting to begin with, but do not then pay you sufficient money in return for hard work. Yes, a Christmas gift of £100 and a £1,000 increase if you’re lucky, but the output vs compensation rate is imbalanced.

Pros

As already mentioned pension is good. The wages are actually decent too for the industry. You might also meet one or two nice people working there. Depending on your role you might even get to work on some interesting things. It will also give you good experience for your CV if you are just starting out.

Cons

So here’s the thing, and it’s nothing new to what’s been mentioned in other reviews…Lots of office politics - yep. Cliques - yep. Lack of growth opportunities- yep. My experience of working there was negative for a variety of reasons, so I wouldn’t recommend even in this tough job climate. But of course everyone is different and some people do actually thrive there.
