Pros

Starting out it was a great experience with a lot of freedom. I was willing to put in the time and do the work as a full time freelance contractor. As a full time contractor I handled a lot of the ongoing work and took on many hats beyond the scope of the established contract at times. After some time in with the company I was able to be very upfront about my where I stood as a contractor and detailed out what the relationship was and established a clear understanding of expectations moving forward. I was exposed to a variety of work, collaboration and client facing time during my stay there. Had some great outside influences that can be seen as mentors. The printing broker we used was a fantastic influence along with the upper management at the in house agency Tipping Point

Cons

Lack of understanding of business landscape of the company's core business, web design, ui and ux. At the time there was already a dated view of how to build and execute web projects, so stepping in as a junior level person it was extremely hard to grow in that area of expertise. With the lack of understanding came other issues. Projects were frequently mis-scoped, under budgeted and just overall mis-gauged based on current web standards and deliverables compared to other companies of the same size. This lack of understanding also extended into video production. The same issues occurred when working on video production work with my teammates. As an outside observer to some of the video work there were a few occasions where contractors/employees were thrown under the bus as an individual rather than taking the hit as an entire entity. This was usually client facing when conflict occurred and had a large impact on morale. Besides the business side of things there was a strong emphasis on the "boys club" mentality at times. I felt extremely bad for some of the females that worked in house on our team, as there were a lot of times where I felt uncomfortable for some of my female counterparts because of what was said around them on and off set. To sum it up I felt like things were poorly managed, lack of trust of contractors and employees alike, micromanagement, lack of understanding of business environments, lack of a business plan, bad taste in culture and overall disrespect. As an additional note, one of the final things done in the end of my experience, was a consultant went through and reviewed all of us to "better the company" which led to even lower morale and almost all creative talent being either fired or leaving from the company.
