Pros
No place is perfect and Comparative is no exception. But they do the important stuff well. This has been my favorite job in the last 10 years. As a former Fortune 100 employee, I continue to be impressed by the operational maturity of this young company. It's a fast-paced start-up environment which is great for software engineers who enjoy rapid personal growth, crave challenging problems to solve, and desire autonomy with flexibility. The team does remote collaboration quite well in Slack. My favorite days "in the office" are when the team is swarming together on the same problem at once. Work-life balance has exceeded my expectations. especially great for software engineers (which makes sense when you consider the CEO is a former engineer). 21+ scheduled PTO days plus unlimited additional PTO. Flexible work hours are for real; some days I work at night and spend the next afternoon with my family. 100% remote. Most days are meeting-less which is ideal for coding and achieving a deep flow state. Compensation is strong, equity is nice, benefits are good. The team is small but mighty. Comparative punches above its weight class in terms of employee talent and diversity as a start-up with limited brand equity as an employer.
Cons
It's a start-up. There's some risk involved. It can be a rollercoaster. Some days are chaotic and hard. Failure happens regularly and it hurts sometimes. If you don't have the stomach for it, this isn't the right place for you. However, I find the risk and chaos is mitigated really well here, better than most. Rarely do I panic. I trust my team and leaders because they've earned it over the past 12 months. No 401k match. CEO & CTO split their time between Comparative and another company (which I do not have equity in) which at times can be frustrating, *but* it also creates some unique synergies and a competitive advantage in the start-up space that is hard to find elsewhere. For example, Comparative may be young, but the CEO experience running another company and navigating venture capital for 8+ years is a huge plus.
