Company culture will drag you down over time. Management is not interested in employees’ ideas for ways to improve the app or workflow, and everyone is discouraged from communicating between departments without going up and down the chain of command. Most of us barely knew what was going on in other departments. The production and decision making process was so inefficient because of the complex chain of command. I can’t complain that the deadlines were hard, or I had to work long hours, but it often felt like I was throwing work into a black hole. Everyone I worked alongside worked to a very high standard, and really felt a sense of ownership and pride in the product some of them had spent many years building. Despite this, I don’t think there was much acknowledgement of employees' expertise and dedication from upper management. Most people had very little indication of the overall direction of the company, leading them to feel isolated and ignorant. In my opinion, this opaqueness led to a huge drain in motivation and happiness. I noticed a tendency in hiring (including myself) towards candidates for whom it’s their first job in that industry, that country or first full time job full stop. The knock on effect of this is, most of the regular employees are too afraid to speak up when they disagree with management, even with good reason. For those who had more experience and confidence in their ability to find other work, they were able to move on. Those that questioned management or rocked the boat too much often had to abruptly move on. Quite often people that should have been replaced, weren't, leaving a few to handle more than they should have to. For many of us, (again myself included) we felt we wouldn’t find a better company. Because of the seeming abruptness of a few terminations, I know it wasn’t just me that was afraid of suddenly being informed I was fired. Possibly because of our naiveté, we thought we just had to be grateful for having a job at all, in Germany, or in our particular industry. I’ve also heard many people think it would be amazing to work for this company because of its close connection to Jetbrains. That is absolutely not the case. As far as I could tell from communications we had with them, their culture is very different. I don’t want this review to be dismissed because it seems very personal and emotional, but I guess I can’t really help that. I spent many years of my life here and definitely learned some things, but I wouldn't recommend working here for more than a year.
