Fun people and culture, not enough people - Marketing Manager Discord Employee Review

Pros

- In my honest unbiased opinion, Discord's on the uprise. The company lost its identity in the past few years trying to broaden its appeal to people who don't 'get' gaming, but after some successful soul-searching, we're doubling down on gaming, and people here are happier for it - Getting to work with people who are fun and actually have a sense of humor is refreshing - People love and believe in the product. Many use it in their own personal lives. This is such a green flag - imagine working with people who actually have a personal stake in the product's success. Not something you see often, even in tech - Lots of things to do and demonstrate impact, strong career/resume builder though team/managers of course have a say in this - Strong top-of-market compensation, and remote-friendly. - No geo-locked pay ranges which is an incredible benefit. SF pay with out the SF costs for a lot of people working remotely. Serious kudos to Discord for paying its people well.

Cons

- Too much work. Discord and leadership want and push for more, more, more, yet don't equip teams with sufficient resources or headcount to make their overly-ambitious goals a reality. The result? The staff suffer. Work-life balance is not respected for many people here. - The company and new leadership laid off a ton of people, even OGs. Yet just months later, starts aggressively rehiring. Really? We couldn't just move existing headcount to those roles? The sad result is we just lose a lot of culture and people who love and get Discord for new FAANG hires chasing a paycheck. - Leadership and management feels disconnected from the harsh realities of the staff here, and is certainly one of the worst parts of working at Discord. Here's the thing for you leaders and managers - when you lead and manage a ton of people out the door ('layoff'), and then say 'we still have big/aggressive goals next year we need to hit!' you come across as unbelievingly tone-deaf and delusional. Might be a surprise but your current staff don't like doing the same amount of work as 2-3 people. Learn to recalibrate your ambitions to the actual, harsh reality created by your own hands.
