Pros

Good compensation, excellent benefits and a quiet office.

Cons

The previous entries of a "bully" or "mean girls" culture could not be closer to the truth. This is an organization that regards like minds only. If you don't think like/agree with upper management, you are a pariah. My experience was not unlike being hustled. My first few months, I felt like a super star. I was given great opportunities and my voice was heard. It was just after my first six months that I started to hear things like "no critical thinking" and "be more strategic". That was also when the nit-picking started and every deliverable was returned with scathing comments. Then, I noticed that I was being excluded from meetings and conversations about my client. At first glance this may seem like a performance problem, but I continued to get great reviews, a promotion and bonuses. I also continued to grow my work. I was respected at the client, but not back at the office. During my time, I saw over 30 people come and go and saw two colleagues need to take extended leave for burn out/anxiety issues. To me, this is an indication of an unhealthy work environment. The culture is similar to a sorority and the quality of your work and your loyalty to the firm doesn't really matter. What matters more is whether or not you are with the "in" crowd. If you aren't, you have no future here. I tried my hardest to be a part of the community, but in the end, I just wasn't successful.

Because this like many reviews is anonymous it is difficult to directly answer your specific situation. However, it states that you began to experience issues after six months but stayed with us for over three years? Having some specifics examples of what happened to you and what if anything you did to make things better would be helpful for us moving forward. We would also find it beneficial to know if this issue was ever raised by you to anyone so that it could have been worked out.

Pros

Location, nice office windows along the water. Good pay and decent benefits.

Cons

In a career that spans two decades, I have never been treated so poorly by mid level and senior management. Any attempt at having a life outside work is not just frowned upon, it's made impossible. Managers display no leadership ability and less professional maturity than junior staff. The inability to manage expectations leads to a chaotic environment and constant last-minute assignments that cause you to cancel plans and stay all evening or weekend. You never know what will be expected of you from one day to the next. Staff quit after just a few months, often with no job to go to, just to regain their sanity. I've never worked in a place where people walked out in frustration without giving notice. Also never seen such a high percentage of staff fired. Many complained of weight loss lost and stress-related health issues. Never before and never since have I been berated by managers in front of clients and fellow staff. I was frequently given assignments out of my area of expertise with no resources to help and wildly unreasonable deadlines. Talk about being set up for failure. My supervisor treated the team with mistrust and lacked any kind of professional maturity, but was highly regarded within the bullying culture of the organization. I am healthier and far better off having left.

We acknowledge that we had some challenges with the leadership team in charge of our Instructional Design practice. Although repeated attempts were made to develop an understanding of the issue, staff members were understandably reluctant to provide a clear picture of what was occurring which kept us from identifying and addressing the problem. Once the issues were recognized, we worked with our management team to improve their leadership and management skills. Those who were unwilling or unable to improve were dismissed. We have apologized to the employees who were subjected to working in an environment that was not consistent with our values. A new leadership team is in place and the environment within the group and the organization has changed dramatically.
