Pros

One of the few good things this place has going for it is the fact that it is a small business. Its small business status is its only differentiator and is the sole reason it gets any contracts awarded to it. It is somehow able to attract capable people, but they do not stay very long.

Cons

Horrible benefits (no life insurance, cannot contribute to 401K until you have been with company for a year, no flexible pre-tax benefits like medical savings account and childcare). Owners micromanage home office staff from a distance; they refuse to institute proper policies, procedures, and systems and essentially just make rules up as they go along. They have massive control and trust issues, and instead of focusing on big picture things like marketing the company to USAID Missions, expanding its client base, or carefully positioning the company to break into new technical or geographic areas, they take it upon themselves to copy edit and format every single document, and insist on reviewing and approving every communication that goes out, even if prepared by professionals who have been doing this work for many years. The owners have supposedly been working in international development for many years but are in dire need of executive coaching as well as basic training in project management and business development. There is no accountability and no introspection. Just a whole lot of paranoia and distrust. Other members of the ‘senior team’ have dubious qualifications and have titles that do not fit their skill sets. There is no long-term plan or vision, and the bottom line is all that matters. Any opportunity that has “small business” in it, they go after, without much thought. Staff are treated like servants, and consultants, like hired help. This has resulted in an exodus of key technical staff this past year.

ECODIT Response

Thank you for your feedback. ECODIT’s core values as a firm are quality and respect. We place a premium on quality work and maintain high standards even for our internal and external communications. Our staff and consultants appreciate the atmosphere of mutual respect, the spirit of collaboration, and the opportunities for advancement offered by the firm. We are continuously improving our benefits package, including our insurance plan, to meet individual and family needs. As a business grows, it will undoubtedly undergo a transition phase of institutionalizing processes and procedures, and decentralizing authority. ECODIT is currently working to address these needs through ongoing organizational development and change management efforts, with support from highly qualified external service providers.

Pros

ECODIT strikes a perfect balance between the flexibility of a small business and the structure of a larger organization. The home office team, including HR, finance, and contracts, is incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and supportive, providing the resources employees need without unnecessary bureaucracy. Their policies and systems are well-designed to enable staff to focus on their work while maintaining a smooth operational environment. I highly recommend ECODIT to anyone seeking to work in USAID contracting, particularly in the fields of environment, resilience, climate, and energy.

Cons

ECODIT operates primarily as a virtual organization, which I find to be a positive aspect, though some may prefer an in-office work environment for collaboration. From what I understand, the Arlington, VA office is being utilized more frequently by staff. While the different practice areas can sometimes feel siloed, these barriers are largely perceived. In my experience, I have been able to connect across practices and access the resources and support I need with ease.
