Pros

I spent 5 happy years at Elwin Street Productions after joining them on a 4-week unpaid internship. The internship role involved all levels of work and I was excited to be able to get involved with technical Editorial tasks and contacting customers for the Sales team, alongside the usual post-office runs and tea-making. Once I was made permanent they worked hard to ensure my role really reflected my strengths and helped me grow and learn on the job. The Senior Management were all supportive and encouraging of myself and of all new employees (many of whom also started as interns) who joined while I was there.

Cons

It is a very small company so everyone is expected to help out with whatever needs doing - it can be high pressure, and if you don't thrive under that situation and don't have the initiative or drive to get involved in every aspect of the company then it probably wouldn't be the right place for you.

Pros

Relatively easy to get compared to other entry level work in publishing. Will help you get in the door of the industry.

Cons

Elwin Street capitalizes off the current creative job market and churns through interns. There is a crazy turnover of interns (you can be fired with a 2 day notice period). Pretty much every consequent job interview I've had asks about working at Elwin Street and how bad it was. It's notorious and everyone has or knows someone who has had a bad experience. It is low-paid and based on freelance contracts, even for colleagues who've been there a year. High stress. No training period, just another junior colleague tasked with looking after you on top of their massive workload. However, you will learn a lot. You will get industry insight that you may not get at a larger, more comfortable company. Bias towards male staff/ hiring.

Pros

You can gain experience. But the cost is high – your self esteem and mental health.

Cons

Haphazard management style. Supervisors enjoy belittling their (young, recently graduated) employees. (One colleague was regularly in tears after constant abuse). Everyone is on a freelance, 0 hours contract, and can be fired with only three days notice. People were fired, then re-hired, according to the whims of management. Employees were frequently working overtime and there was a constant environment of extreme stress. It's overall an unpleasant environment to work in, one that feeds on the terrible state of the current job market. Additionally, the office is a house that is occasionally rented as an Air B&B, meaning that staff have to vacate at unpredictable hours. Given the 0 hour contracts, this meant losing valuable income at random times.
