Toxic work environment under the smoke and mirrors - Anonymous employee Emory University Employee Review

Pros

Supposedly flexible schedule. However, I have not really found the time to enjoy that benefit. Very generous sick days and vacation days! As a monthly employee, you earn one sick day and one vacation day a month + 2 floating holidays for a total of 14 vacation days per year to use. Your health benefits allows you access to excellent healthcare providers and you know you are in good hands!

Cons

401K not matched for the first year. Good luck finding time to use your vacation days. Behind all those fancy degrees and titles lies some childish, tantrum-throwing, manipulative professionals. Some of these individuals are just plain disrespectful and horrible to work with. Depending on the department that you work in, you can either have the best work environment with very low turnover or work in a nightmare scenario where most people jump ship after one year. Pay is VERY LOW for some of what you are expected to put up with. Raises are also extremely low (if you even get them), and the lack of bonuses makes it difficult to make ends meet. Professional development and career advancement is limited, and it takes forever to get a promotion. Unless you live nearby a MARTA station, get ready to fork over an extra ~$800 from your meager paycheck to pay for daily parking every year. Constant under-staffing makes the job even more stressful. My current department has 20+ programs with constant emergency deadlines that are often unattainable. Morale can get very low because there is no sense of accomplishment with these impossible deadlines you get < 8 hours to finish... often because management is disconnected and caught up with their own professional development.
