Pros

Pre-Covid Epic was a fantastic place for an early career job. There are lots of new people that are learning and growing at a similar pace and almost everyone is eager to engage in new ideas and make new friends. The campus itself is beautiful when viewed from outside. The culinary options are diverse, healthy, and locally sourced. Also the pay and benefits are top notch for the region when considering that most new hires are coming in with little to no experience in the industry.

Cons

Fundamentally the role of the Technical Solutions Engineer is to guide customers to success in using Epic software. The issue you run into right away when starting at Epic is recognizing that the software is often clunky, confusing, and inconsistent; this is what you will rage your eternal struggle against for the remainder of your career. If you are able to deal with the complexity of the software that’s great, now the next step is recognizing that there is little to no vision of future direction from leadership. Epic’s software is often described as one of the main causes of physician burnout, and I honestly believe it, instead of accepting this fact and building something new and innovative, the company spends massive effort to either fight this fact or suggest that pure training will solve the problem (spoiler, it won’t). There is so much I could say about how Epic is feeding into the failings of American healthcare, but I don’t think that is what you are interested in if reading this review. What you need to know is that you will work hard, very hard, in this role to make clunky software work. Also, Covid response from management was slow, inconsistent, insulting, and brought to light the lack of innovation that sits atop the Epic pyramid.
