Pros

FINE employs some quality people. I genuinely liked so many of the developers, designers and project managers. The work was held to a high standard that people could take pride in. Pay was competitive, health insurance was great.

Cons

Many staff were expected to work much more than 40 hours per week and given unrealistic deadlines, none of which matches up with the "be human" tagline that ruled when I started there. It was impossible to get meaningful and consistent investment from the partners in professional development, work culture, or any kind of equity/diversity/environmentally conscious initiatives. Lip service at best. Promises of career advancement were often withheld or ignored. Partners could be fickle and arbitrary and play favorites, which led to significant turnover. Toxic behavior by favorites was allowed to fester. Multiple talented people were hired to do jobs that they were destined to fail at because the partners were not invested in their work.

Pros

The people at FINE are super talented and smart and have a LOT of compassion and empathy for each other. It's super rare to see this level of humanity at an agency. The leadership are committed to taking a time out and redefining the agency with intention and making sure the team has what it needs to succeed. It's a slow process but it is actively moving towards a best in class employee experience and operating structure. I have not worked in an organization this aligned and purposeful and it makes me really happy to know we are all doing our parts to make the agency what we want it to be.

Cons

Because the agency has been a small family operation for so long and has grown so quickly, there are a lot of operational things that have been neglected like policies and processes. This has caused a lot of ambiguity for staff on how to get things done or who to go to for help. As mentioned above, there is renewed focus and a whole team dedicated to ironing out these pieces but it takes time.
