I worked at Fanatics for 5 years in a couple of departments in my early career, falling in love with the people and potential this company showed. Despite the growing pain points I experienced in my time there, I loved Fanatics- so much so that after a year of leaving to pursue career growth at another company I later returned in a role in hopes that things could have only improved from my prior experience. Unfortunately, the company felt significantly worse the second time around. What was once disorganized has evolved into a constant state of reactive chaos. The most frustrating part is that this could genuinely be one of the coolest jobs in the industry. Working with major sports leagues, iconic teams, and passionate fans should make this an incredible place to build a career. And the people who work there are truly some of the best I’ve worked with: talented, hardworking, collaborative, and resilient. Many employees care deeply about the business and go above and beyond every day to make things work. But the environment they’re working in makes that extremely difficult. Compensation does not align with the expectations placed on employees. The pace is intense and the responsibilities are often far beyond the scope of the role, yet pay and incentives lag behind industry standards. For a company of this scale and visibility, the compensation structure feels surprisingly out of step. Career growth is another major challenge. There is constant talk about opportunity and advancement, but in reality roles shift frequently, reorganizations happen regularly, and clear career paths are difficult to identify. Employees often end up absorbing more responsibility without meaningful development or progression. Operationally, the company can be a logistical nightmare. Planning frequently feels reactive rather than strategic. Inventory issues, shifting deadlines, and last-minute pivots create an endless cycle of fire drills. Cross-functional alignment between merchandising, sales, planning, and operations is inconsistent, which leads to inefficiencies and unnecessary stress across teams. Perhaps the most concerning issue is leadership credibility. Commitments around compensation, roles, growth opportunities, and organizational direction are frequently made and then walked back or not honored. This creates a significant trust gap between employees and upper leadership. In my own experience, I was explicitly told I would receive a portion of a bonus I had already worked toward despite my resignation, only for that commitment to be reversed. Situations like this make it difficult to trust leadership or feel that employee contributions are truly valued. The most disappointing part is that the ingredients for success are all there — incredible brand partnerships, passionate employees, and an industry that people genuinely love. But without stronger structure, clearer strategy, and leadership accountability, the potential continues to go unrealized.
