Pros

The staff truly cares about the mission of the organization.

Cons

The management of Farm Sanctuary seems to believe that the negative reviews here are from a vocal minority, but, as an employee, I can tell you that 99% of the staff feels this way. This review is a warning to anyone thinking about working here to run, don't walk, in the other direction. Senior management, specifically President & Co-founder Gene Baur and CEO Ellen O'Connell, do not care about you or making FS an equitable and fair place to work. Gene Baur runs this company like a dictator, but one with zero organizational skills, so he is constantly demanding action then contradicting, forgetting and going back on his word. They do not care about the endless cries of staff burnout and add projects without considering their staff, resources, best practices or any institutional knowledge. They think they know better than the people who were hired to do their jobs, causing morale issues and a culture of dissatisfaction and fatigue from the poor employees who have to struggle to keep up with their ever-changing and increasing demands. The board does nothing to help because they're purposefully shielded from many of these issues and, honestly, have failed to take action in the past in favor of firing employees who dare to disagree or speak out about the injustices and ongoing issues. You will never be safe at Farm Sanctuary; you're always one disagreement with Gene or Ellen away from being fired. Gene will go around you to get what he wants and will cut you out if he sees you as a barrier to that. Managers and Directors cannot shield their teams from this as they are afraid of being fired as well, which means that their teams are working over 40 hours a week and on weekends to fulfill these insane demands. I could go on, but please use this as a cautionary tale to not waste your time with an organization that doesn't care about you and, honestly, barely cares about animal rights unless it's in service to its founder's ego. I imagine everyone here is looking for a new job every single day.

Pros

Not many really. What a complete and utter disaster this organization is.

Cons

Toxic founder and CEO. A board that just let's him do what ever he wants - abusive, manipulative behavior, a CFO and Legal Counsel and senior team that know the issues but just keep their heads down and collect paychecks. There is nothing about this organization that benefits the world anymore - they are not doing meangingful advocacy or saving many farm animals - it is a glorified petting zoo - but one that is now actually causing harm to the animal residents, and has turned into an abusive cult for the poor workers who still work there - there is a reason that there are years of horrible reviews of this place - do not under any circumstances get involved in any way with this organization - you will waste your time, energy and soul. Run as fast as you can and do ot look back. There is nothing, absolutely nothing good about what is going on in Watkins Glen or CA. All the glossy photos and pretty language about the sanctuaries are facades - the reality is sad and sorry and the board of directors, especially the chair of the board, is so hoodwinked by the founder that he cannot see the truth. The board should all be fired and held accountable - and the place should be shut down unless the founder is ousted and the senior team replaced. But I have little hope that this will ever happen.
