Pros

There are a lot of opportunities for both lateral and upward movement, if you wish to take them. The pay is good, and if you work 80 hours a month, you qualify for benefits. Scheduling is very flexible around school schedules, and in over ten years, I have only ever had one time off request denied. Also, most of the employees are great people, and at my current store especially make people feel welcome.

Cons

There are never enough staff on the sales floor, and those who are get yelled at by customers for there not being enough employees (why are you yelling at us underlings? If we had a say, there would be far more of us available to help you!) and berated by management for not doing the work of two or three people. It takes forever for new hires to get benefits and pay raises, and once you top out, you're lucky to get a 25 cent cost of living raise once every couple of years. Workplace politics are horrible at this company.

Pros

Job can be fun and interesting Always something new to learn Lots of personal fulfillment as a manager when things go right

Cons

Unsupportive upper management Toxic work culture, unpaid overtime is rewarded and even expected or forced, even to the tune of multiple weeks in a row with no days off when you are salaried. They claim to support work life balance but even the smallest effort to set boundaries is heavily punished. Not paid as much as we should be for everything we have to do and deal with
